I think copying is not okay, but being inspired by someones work is perfectly acceptable. Stealing is taking something from the original artist but not completely using the picture, you change it up ever so slightly that it's not the same exact piece.
For my artist remix I drew Alice in Wonderland spunky and with long hair like Rapunzel unlike her usual shy and caring self. I thought it was really fun and interesting because I was able to see some of my favorite characters altered slightly but enough that I find something new to like. I learned a bit while creating this piece like how take take someones art or idea but change it into a new piece entirely. I finally got to use the light board and was able to play with different color pallets. Yes I was able to utilize watercolor dry brush style for small areas something I don't usually do. It was an excellent experience because I usually don't think about using watercolors dry brush style since they're named water color.
The merit of this artwork is the attitude displayed by the antagonist and the background. You wouldn't normally picture the quiet Alice as a spunky long haired gal, and seeing her like this makes you imagine how the story may have happened differently. The background which includes a scattered deck of cards and the Cheshire cats mad smile also gives some merit because of it's corrupt sense meanwhile the original picture was light and flowing.
